“War Horse” opens with the birth of Joey, the titular horse of the story, in a pasture in Devonshire, and follows his observations of human life as he is separated from his mother at a country auction where pride and stubbornness are prevalent; as he is adored by a teenager who struggles, along with his lame father and devoted mother, to use Joey to save the family farm; as he is sold to a British cavalry officer at the onset of World War I; as he is captured by a young German soldier who uses Joey to flee the terrors of the war; as he is embraced by a French family torn apart by the war; as he is used by German artillerymen to haul the big guns through the muck and mire of the Western Front; as he becomes entangled in the barbed wire of No Man’s Land to allow a German and an English soldier to demonstrate extraordinary humanity; and as he draws a myriad of diverse people together before the end of the War to End Wars.
